Being convinced that someone is wrong can make it easy to stop listening to them altogether. But Scripture reminds us that listening does not mean agreeing, compromising truth, or changing the Gospel. Peter knew the truth about Jesus, yet God still had to change his perspective about the people that truth was meant to reach. Even Billy Graham learned to look beyond the outward appearance of the counterculture generation and recognize people who desperately needed Jesus. Sometimes we can be right about the truth while still being wrong about the person—or missing something around the edges. James calls believers to be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to anger. Jesus never compromised truth, but He also never wrote people off. Our goal isn't simply to win arguments; it's to hear people, love people, speak truth, and ultimately point them to Jesus.
